Litter-Robot 4 vs PETKIT PuraMax 2 (2026): The Three-Year Cost, Priced

Two automatic litter boxes, $309.01 apart on the shelf. The standard way this comparison goes is that the expensive one earns it back on consumables — cheap printer, expensive ink. We went looking for that story with a spreadsheet and the manufacturers' own consumable prices, and it is not there.

The PETKIT PuraMax 2 is cheaper to buy than the Whisker Litter-Robot 4, and it is also cheaper to run. That means the Litter-Robot's $309 premium has to be justified by something other than money — and it can be, for a specific kind of household. Figuring out whether you are that household is what this page is for.

The N50 line is where this comparison is most often gotten wrong, including by us on the first pass. Its $19.99 price tag looks like a monthly charge and gets quoted that way. It is not: PETKIT states that "a pack of three provides three months of continuous odor control," so the real figure is about $6.66 a month. Whisker's carbon filter is genuinely cheaper at $5.00 — but only by about $20 a year, which the liner line more than reverses.

The crossover that never arrives

Carry both boxes forward and the Litter-Robot 4 does not catch up. It falls further behind, because it is the more expensive box to feed as well as to buy.

That is the finding, and it is worth stating plainly because the category's marketing runs the other way: on this pair, the premium box is not an investment that pays back. It is a more capable appliance that costs more forever. Whether that is a bad deal depends entirely on whether you need the capability, which is the next section.

There is one assumption worth stress-testing, and it is the one most favorable to Whisker. We priced Whisker's own $1.00 drawer liners because that is the documented consumable. Plenty of owners skip them and line the drawer with a generic bag or run it bare. Do that and the Litter-Robot 4's running cost drops to roughly $60 a year, which makes it about $27 a year cheaper to feed than the PuraMax 2 — and at that rate it takes about eleven years to repay the $309 price gap. Even under the most generous reading available to it, the Litter-Robot 4 is behind on money for well over a decade.

So what does the $309 actually buy?

Three things, and they are real. None of them is savings.

A bigger cat. Whisker rates the Litter-Robot 4 for cats from 3 to 25 lbs. PETKIT rates the PuraMax 2 for 3.3 to 22 lbs and says not to use it for pets under six months. If your cat is near or over 22 lbs, this is not a preference — it is the specification that decides the purchase.

More cats. Whisker documents the Litter-Robot 4 for up to four cats, with a larger waste drawer doing the work. The PuraMax 2's 7L bin is rated for up to 15 days hands-free with one cat, and that figure scales down fast as cats are added. At three or four cats, the Litter-Robot's capacity advantage is the thing you will actually notice week to week.

A track record. The Litter-Robot 4 has been shipping since 2022. Failure modes are documented, parts are stocked, and repair knowledge is public. The PuraMax 2 is newer and its documentation is visibly less mature — when we went to PETKIT's own PuraMax 2 product URL for specifications, the page served us content branded for the Purobot Max 3, a different model. That is why every PuraMax 2 specification on this page comes from the live Amazon listing for the exact unit sold rather than from PETKIT's website. It is a documentation failure, not a hardware one, but it is a fair preview of what support may feel like.

If none of those three describe your household, the honest reading is that $309 is buying reassurance. That is a legitimate thing to buy — it is just worth knowing that is what you are buying.

Safety, subscriptions, and other things people assume

Neither box requires a subscription for core function. This one has drifted badly in public discussion. Whisker's own subscription page says "All previously included device features will remain free to use—you will still maintain access to SmartScale® identification and weight tracking." Whisker+ costs $7.99 a month or $79.90 a year and adds extended history and reporting; the Litter-Robot 4's cleaning, app control, and per-cat weight logging are not behind it. We found no PETKIT subscription gating the PuraMax 2's core cleaning or per-cat tracking either.

Neither box has been recalled. We queried the CPSC's saferproducts.gov recall API on August 17, 2026 for Whisker, Litter-Robot, and PETKIT across the product-name, manufacturer, and recall-title fields, and separately for "cat litter" and "litter box" as categories. Every query returned zero records. We also ran control queries that did return known recalls, confirming the endpoint was answering rather than failing silently — so this is a clean finding, not an absence of evidence.

Safety design is comparable on paper. PETKIT documents seven infrared and four weight sensors plus an anti-pinch structure that keeps the entrance open during rotation. Whisker documents its own weight sensing and laser entry detection. We have not tested either mechanism and are not going to rank them from spec sheets.

A note on the Litter-Robot 5 Pro, since people ask

Buyers comparing these two almost always ask whether to skip both and buy the newest Litter-Robot. Our answer is no, and the reason deserves care, because the honest evidence is thinner than the internet suggests.

There is one substantive named review of the Litter-Robot 5 Pro's reliability: BGR's Christian de Looper, published February 8, 2026. He writes that "the Litter-Robot 5 Pro has taken a bit of a step backward when it comes to reliability compared to the model I'd been using for years," notes that "Motor issues popped up regularly even though the unit wasn't overfilled" and that "the sensors kept detecting 'extended scale activity' when no cat was anywhere near the robot" — "at least once a week during testing." His conclusion is deliberately measured: "if you're like me, you may find that the Litter-Robot 4 is slightly more reliable."

That is one reviewer's hands-on experience, not an industry consensus, and we are not going to inflate it into one. What it supports is a modest claim: the Litter-Robot 4 is the mature platform, the 5 Pro is new, and the most detailed independent account currently available found the older box slightly more reliable. For a device you will own for years, "known quantity" is worth something — and it is the same argument that favors the Litter-Robot 4 over the PuraMax 2 on track record.

The 5 Pro's dual AI cameras are also what buyers are really paying the premium for, and those camera features require a paid Whisker+ plan. That subscription question does not apply to either box on this page.

What neither box changes

An automatic litter box is an appliance, not a veterinary tool, and both manufacturers' app dashboards can blur that line.

The AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines acknowledge self-cleaning boxes as legitimate options without endorsing them as superior to a large, well-maintained traditional box. AAFP's resource-distribution guidance — one box per cat, plus one extra — does not stop applying because a box automates itself. A three-cat household that replaces three boxes with one appliance has reduced its litter-box provision no matter which of these two it bought.

And the per-cat weight and frequency data both boxes produce is a trend signal for a conversation with your veterinarian, not a diagnosis. The Merck Veterinary Manual is explicit that health interpretation belongs to a veterinarian. If your cat's behavior changes suddenly — straining, frequent small urinations, or eliminating outside the box — the ASPCA, the Cornell Feline Health Center, and Merck all put veterinary evaluation first, ahead of any troubleshooting of the machine.
