Best Indoor Rabbit Cages & Pens (2026)
A cage is a rabbit's bedroom, not its home. Six indoor cages and pens ranked on stated size, the base under the rabbit's feet, access and containment, with the space standards that decide how much room a house rabbit needs.

The Short Answer
Treat the cage as the bedroom and give the rabbit a pen or a rabbit-proofed room as the living space. House Rabbit Society says a cage should be 3-4 times the rabbit's stretched-out length and names a 4 x 4 foot exercise pen with free-roam time as an ideal setup for most. The VISCOO 32-panel pen ranks first: its listing gives 31.5-inch walls, 8 transparent top panels, a door, about 0.5-inch grid spacing and a 24 x 48 inch floor mat. The Living World habitat is the best cage, at 46.9 inches long with a plastic base and a two-part opening top. The MidWest Wabbitat has a 5.5-inch deep base and takes an extension, but at 39.5 inches long it is the shortest cage here. The 60-inch cage has the largest stated footprint, on a grid tread plate.
Every product on this list has been scored against the PetPal Gear Score, a weighted composite of expert consensus, observed effectiveness, animal safety, long-term durability, and value. Review method: Editorial synthesis of House Rabbit Society, Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF), RSPCA, RSPCA Australia and Rabbit.org housing guidance, read against manufacturer-supplied Amazon listing specifications recorded September 28 and October 3, 2026 and Amazon prices checked October 3, 2026. Rankings follow the published PetPal House Rabbit Housing Score weights. No first-hand product testing.. Synthesized from 5+ expert sources.
A house rabbit needs two spaces, not one. House Rabbit Society puts the difference plainly: "The cage is not a rabbit’s living space but rather more like a bedroom for resting." The living space is a pen, a rabbit-proofed room, or both. This guide ranks indoor rabbit housing with that split in mind: four cages to serve as the bedroom and two pens to serve as the house.
The RSPCA takes the same view of indoor rabbits: "For rabbits kept indoors, their enclosure could be an indoor pen or even a ‘rabbit proofed’ room in your house – as long as hazards are removed and your rabbit's needs can be met, this can become a safe, enriching and happy home for them." So read every cage below as one piece of a setup, not the whole of it.
These picks are editorial synthesis. PetPalHQ does not run a testing lab, and no cage or pen here has been tried by us. Each was chosen by reading its Amazon listing against House Rabbit Society, RWAF, RSPCA, RSPCA Australia and Rabbit.org guidance. Where this guide could not confirm a product's size, it says so rather than guess. Prices change, so confirm current price and availability before buying.
How Big Should an Indoor Rabbit Cage Be?
Measure the rabbit, not the cage first. House Rabbit Society's rule is "Any provided cage should be 3-4x the stretch out length of the rabbit." Lay the rabbit out at full stretch, or watch it flop, and multiply. A rabbit that stretches 18 inches needs a cage 54 to 72 inches long. Of the cages here, only the 60-inch cage, at 59.06 x 36.22 inches, meets the 3x rule for that rabbit. The Living World habitat is 46.9 inches long and the Wabbitat 39.5 inches, which at 3x suit rabbits up to about 15.6 and 13.2 inches. The clear-door tray cage's title gives 140 * 45 * 52 with no unit, so read its size on the listing before you order.
For the living space, House Rabbit Society names a 4 x 4 foot exercise pen with free-roam time as an ideal setup for most rabbits. Both pens here, at 47.5 x 23.7 and 48.4 x 24.8 inches, cover about half that area. The RWAF sets a higher bar for a pair: "Our recommended living area for 2 average sized rabbits (and they should be kept at least in pairs) is a single enclosed area of at least 3m x 2m by 1m high." That is roughly 10 by 6.5 feet and about 39 inches high, which is room-sized. No single product here reaches it, so for two rabbits plan on a rabbit-proofed room or several pens joined together.
Floors and Head Room
The RSPCA wants floors solid, not wired or barred, and non-slip. Two cages here state a solid base: the Wabbitat's 5.5-inch deep base and the Living World habitat's plastic bottom base. The clear-door tray cage states a thickened plastic base over pull-out trays, so confirm the surface the rabbit stands on. Both pens include a 24 x 48 inch floor mat (PAWING's listing calls its mat waterproof). The 60-inch cage lists a removable grid tread plate over its tray; cover it or take it out. If any base or mat feels slick, add bedding or a rug for grip.
Head room is the other check. RSPCA Australia sets the minimum cage height for rabbits over 12 weeks at 45 cm, about 17.7 inches, and says the rabbit should be able to sit upright with its ears fully erect. The PAWING playpen's stated 16.1-inch height falls below that with its roof on. On a multi-level cage, check each level, not the overall height.
Where the Other Rabbit Guides Fit
If this is your first rabbit, the new rabbit starter setup checklist covers a Ferplast Krolik XXL cage and an 8-panel playpen, plus the hay, litter and hideouts that go inside. For a rabbit that lives outdoors, the outdoor rabbit hutches and runs guide covers weatherproofing and predator protection. Sharing a home with guinea pigs too? The guinea pig cages guide covers cavy housing, and the chinchilla and rat cages guide covers large cages for those species.

- 47.5x23.7x31.5 per the listing title (inches, matching its 24 x 48 inch mat)
- 8 transparent panels that fit on top as lids
- A door, and grid spacing of about 0.5 inches
- 24 x 48 inch 600D oxford cloth floor mat with 4.7-inch sides
This pen ranks first because its listing covers the most of what a rabbit's space needs. Its title gives a size of 47.5x23.7x31.5 (inches, matching its 24 x 48 inch mat), and it lists 8 transparent panels that fit on top as lids, a door, grid spacing of about 0.5 inches, and a 24 x 48 inch 600D oxford cloth floor mat with 4.7-inch sides.
The walls stand well above the 45 cm RSPCA Australia sets as the minimum cage height for rabbits over 12 weeks, so a rabbit can sit up with its ears raised even with the lids on. The mat gives a solid layer under the rabbit's feet; the RSPCA also wants floors non-slip, so watch how the rabbit moves on it.
Its floor area is the limit. At 47.5 x 23.7 inches it covers about half the area of the 4 x 4 foot pen House Rabbit Society describes: "A 4’x4’ puppy exercise pen set up with access to free roam time is an ideal size setup for most." Treat it as a run for one rabbit, or as a zone inside a larger rabbit-proofed room. At 31.5 inches it is also short of the 1 m height the RWAF sets for its recommended living area.
What We Love
- Stated 31.5-inch height clears RSPCA Australia's 45 cm minimum
- 8 transparent top panels, a door and about 0.5-inch grid spacing
- 24 x 48 inch 600D oxford cloth floor mat included
What Could Be Better
- Stated footprint is about half the area of House Rabbit Society's 4 x 4 foot pen
- Below the 1 m height in RWAF's recommended living area
The Verdict
The VISCOO 32-panel pen gives a rabbit tall walls, a lid and a floor mat on a small footprint, so it works best as a run for one rabbit or a zone inside a rabbit-proofed room.

- 46.9 x 22.8 x 24 inches, per the listing
- Upper wire frame over a plastic bottom base
- Top opens in 2 separate parts
- Wire door at the front
Getting a rabbit out of a cage is often harder than getting food in. The Living World habitat is built around that problem: its listing says the top opens easily in 2 separate parts, with a wire door at the front as well, so you can lift a rabbit out from above rather than reaching through a side door.
Underneath the wire frame sits a plastic bottom base. That matters for the RSPCA's floor advice: "The floors of their housing should be solid (not wired or barred, as this can hurt their feet) and non-slip – rabbits are burrowers, so their housing needs to be designed to stop them digging and escaping, or predators digging their way in." If the base feels slick, a mat or bedding on top covers the non-slip half.
The listing gives 46.9 x 22.8 x 24 inches. At 3 times the stretched-out length, that suits a rabbit that stretches up to about 15.6 inches; at 4 times, up to about 11.7 inches. It costs nearly three times as much as the Wabbitat, and no extension is named in its listing.
What We Love
- Top opens in 2 separate parts, plus a front door
- Plastic bottom base under the wire frame
- Longer stated length than the Wabbitat, at 46.9 inches
What Could Be Better
- At 46.9 inches long, the 3x rule fits a rabbit only up to about 15.6 inches stretched out
- Costs nearly three times as much as the Wabbitat
- No extension named in its listing
The Verdict
Choose the Living World habitat as a bedroom cage when lifting the rabbit out from above matters more than price, and add a non-slip layer over the plastic base.

- 39.5 x 23.62 x 19.75 inches, per the listing
- 5.5-inch deep base to contain litter
- Top access plus full side-door access
- Compatible with the 158WEX wire extension or the 158HEX wood rabbit hutch extension
- Rabbit cage (model 158)
A rabbit cage earns its keep on two jobs: holding a litter area without spilling it across the floor, and letting you reach the rabbit and the mess without a struggle. The Wabbitat does both on paper. Its listing describes a 5.5-inch deep base to contain litter and access from the top as well as a full side door, which is the combination that makes daily spot-cleaning quick.
Size holds it back. The listing gives 39.5 x 23.62 x 19.75 inches, the shortest cage on this page. House Rabbit Society's rule is "Any provided cage should be 3-4x the stretch out length of the rabbit." At 3 times, 39.5 inches suits a rabbit that stretches up to about 13.2 inches; at 4 times, up to about 9.9 inches. Measure your rabbit before you order.
It is the only cage here whose listing names an extension. MidWest says model 158 is compatible with both extensions to create an even larger living space, a wire 158WEX or a wood 158HEX. This guide did not read or price either extension, so check that listing separately. Pair the cage with a pen or a rabbit-proofed room for the hours the rabbit is awake.
What We Love
- 5.5-inch deep base to contain litter
- Top and full side-door access for cleaning and handling
- Takes a wire or wood extension for more room
- Lowest-priced of the four cages on this page
What Could Be Better
- Shortest cage here at 39.5 inches; the 3x rule fits a rabbit only up to about 13.2 inches stretched out
- The 158WEX and 158HEX extensions were not read or priced for this guide
The Verdict
Start with the Wabbitat as a bedroom cage for a smaller rabbit, or when a deep litter base and the option to add an extension matter most, and give the rabbit a pen for its living space.

- 48.4 x 24.8 x 16.1 inches, per the listing's product dimensions
- 20 coated steel panels, including 8 transparent panels for the roof
- 0.5-inch spaced iron mesh, a removable top cover and a built-in door
- 24 x 48 inch PVC-coated waterproof mat
Pens are where most house rabbits now live. Rabbit.org puts it this way: "Metal-wire exercise pens (or x-pens), sold in pet supply stores, are by far the most popular rabbit housing of recent years." The RSPCA agrees that an indoor pen can be a rabbit's enclosure, as long as hazards are removed.
The PAWING playpen's listing describes 20 coated steel panels, 8 of them transparent panels for the roof, 0.5-inch spaced iron mesh, a removable top cover, a built-in door, and a 24 x 48 inch PVC-coated waterproof mat. It is the lowest price on this page.
Height is why it ranks fourth. The listing's product dimensions are 48.4 x 24.8 x 16.1 inches. With the roof on, 16.1 inches is below the 45 cm (about 17.7 inches) RSPCA Australia sets as the minimum cage height for rabbits over 12 weeks, and a rabbit may not be able to sit upright with its ears raised. Check that your rabbit can, or leave the roof off for a rabbit that does not jump. The footprint is also about half the area of House Rabbit Society's 4 x 4 foot pen.
What We Love
- Roof of 8 transparent panels, 0.5-inch mesh and a built-in door
- 24 x 48 inch waterproof mat included
- Lowest price on this page
What Could Be Better
- Stated 16.1-inch height is below RSPCA Australia's 45 cm minimum when the roof is on
- Stated footprint is about half the area of House Rabbit Society's 4 x 4 foot pen
The Verdict
Pick the PAWING playpen for a smaller rabbit that can sit up with its ears raised under a 16.1-inch roof, or use it open-topped for a rabbit that does not jump.

- 59.06 x 36.22 x 23.03 inches, per the listing
- Vertical multi-level structure
- Removable grid tread plate over a detachable bottom tray
- Rolling casters with locking casters
This is the biggest cage on the page. The listing gives 59.06 x 36.22 x 23.03 inches in a vertical multi-level structure, and names rabbits first among the animals it is meant for. That footprint is a little under the floor area of the 4 x 4 foot pen House Rabbit Society describes. At 3 times the stretched-out length, a 59-inch cage suits a rabbit that stretches up to about 19.7 inches; at 4 times, up to about 14.8 inches.
The floor is the problem. The listing's special features include a removable grid tread plate over a detachable bottom tray. The RSPCA says "The floors of their housing should be solid (not wired or barred, as this can hurt their feet) and non-slip – rabbits are burrowers, so their housing needs to be designed to stop them digging and escaping, or predators digging their way in." Cover the grid with a solid, non-slip layer, or take it out. The listing also describes removable trays and locking casters.
Height is the other check. The 23.03-inch figure is the overall height across more than one level, and the listing gives no clearance for each level, so confirm the rabbit can sit up with its ears raised on the level where it spends most time. It is also the highest price here.
What We Love
- Largest stated footprint on this page at 59.06 x 36.22 inches
- Removable trays and locking casters
What Could Be Better
- Grid tread plate floor; the RSPCA wants floors solid, not wired or barred
- Overall height is 23.03 inches across multiple levels, and no per-level clearance is given; RSPCA Australia sets 45 cm as the minimum for rabbits over 12 weeks
- Highest price on this page
The Verdict
Buy the 60-inch cage when stated floor space is the priority, cover the grid tread plate, and confirm each level lets the rabbit sit up with its ears raised.

- Drawer-type trays in the base that pull out for cleaning
- Iron mesh with a thickened plastic base
- Clear acrylic front panel
- 4 lockable casters
Cleaning is the reason to choose this cage. Its listing says the base is equipped with drawer-type trays that pull out for cleaning, with no need to move the cage, and describes iron mesh with a thickened plastic base. The front is a clear acrylic panel, and 4 lockable casters let the cage roll out of the way.
Size is the gap. The listing title gives "(140 * 45 * 52)" with no unit, and this guide could not find a stated size in inches or centimeters, so it scores low on stated size. Before buying, check its measurements against House Rabbit Society's 3-4x stretch-length rule, and confirm what the rabbit stands on above the trays.
What We Love
- Pull-out drawer trays in a thickened plastic base
- Clear acrylic front panel
- 4 lockable casters
What Could Be Better
- The title gives 140 * 45 * 52 with no unit; size not stated in inches or centimeters
- Costs more than twice as much as the Wabbitat
The Verdict
Consider the clear-door tray cage when quick tray cleaning matters, and confirm its size before ordering.

How We Score
Formula
PetPal House Rabbit Housing Score = (Stated Size vs the Standard × 0.30) + (Base and Footing × 0.25) + (Access and Cleaning × 0.20) + (Containment and Height × 0.15) + (Value × 0.10), each factor scored 0-10 and the total rounded to one decimal; every pick's factor scores are listed in the comparison table
Score Factors
- Stated Size vs the Standard · 30%
- Stated length, read against House Rabbit Society's rule that a cage should be 3-4 times the rabbit's stretched-out length and its 4 x 4 foot pen benchmark. Scoring: 9 for a stated length of 59.06 inches (the 3x rule fits a rabbit up to about 19.7 inches); 6 for a stated length of 46.9 to 48.4 inches (about 15.6 to 16.1 inches); 4 for a stated length of 39.5 inches (about 13.2 inches); 3 when the listing gives no unit for its size. Weighted highest because space is what every source here puts first.
- Base and Footing · 25%
- What the rabbit stands on, read against the RSPCA's advice that floors should be solid, not wired or barred, and non-slip. Scoring: 10 for a stated solid base (a plastic bottom base, or a 5.5-inch deep base to contain litter); 8 for a stated floor mat in a pen; 4 for a stated grid tread plate, which the rabbit would stand on unless it is covered or removed; 4 when the stated floor above pull-out trays is not confirmed solid.
- Access and Cleaning · 20%
- How you reach the rabbit and the litter. Scoring: 8 for a stated top opening plus a stated door, or a stated door plus pull-out trays and lockable casters; 6 for a stated door plus a removable top, or removable trays plus locking casters with no door stated.
- Containment and Height · 15%
- Whether the rabbit stays in and has head room. Scoring: 10 for a pen with stated top panels, about 0.5-inch grid and a stated height above RSPCA Australia's 45 cm minimum; 6 for a cage with a top; 4 for a roofed pen whose stated 16.1-inch height is below the 45 cm minimum.

When NOT to Buy
Do not buy any cage on this page as the rabbit's whole home. House Rabbit Society says "The cage is not a rabbit’s living space but rather more like a bedroom for resting." and the RWAF's recommended living area for two rabbits is a single enclosed area of at least 3 m x 2 m by 1 m high, far larger than any cage here. If the rabbit will live outdoors, these indoor picks are the wrong category; the outdoor hutches and runs guide covers weatherproofing and predators. If you are setting up for a first rabbit and want one cage and one pen chosen for you, the starter setup checklist covers a Ferplast Krolik XXL and an 8-panel playpen. And do not leave a rabbit standing on a grid floor; cover it with a solid, non-slip layer.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can a rabbit live in a cage full time?
- Not according to any source this guide uses. House Rabbit Society calls the cage a bedroom for resting, and the RWAF says a single enclosed area for two rabbits should be at least 3 m x 2 m by 1 m high. A cage works as a home base inside a larger pen or rabbit-proofed room, with free-roam time on top.
- Is a dog exercise pen OK for a rabbit?
- House Rabbit Society's own example of an ideal setup is a 4 x 4 foot puppy exercise pen with access to free-roam time, so a pen sold for dogs can work if its mesh and height suit the rabbit. The two pens picked here are sold as small animal playpens, and both list about 0.5-inch mesh or grid spacing, which is the kind of detail to check on any pen.
- Do I need a pen with a roof?
- Not always, but a roof settles two problems: a rabbit that jumps, and other pets in the same room. Both pens here list 8 transparent top panels. Check the height under the roof: the VISCOO pen's walls are 31.5 inches, while the PAWING playpen's stated height is 16.1 inches, below RSPCA Australia's 45 cm cage minimum.
- Are wire-bottom cages bad for rabbits?
- The RSPCA says housing floors should be solid, not wired or barred, because wire can hurt rabbits' feet. If a cage has a wire floor grid over the tray, like the 60-inch cage's grid tread plate, cover it or leave it out, and give the rabbit a solid, non-slip surface to stand on.
- How tall should a rabbit pen be?
- RSPCA Australia's 45 cm minimum applies to cages, and the RWAF's living-area standard runs to 1 m high. The VISCOO 32-panel pen's listing gives 31.5 inches, which clears the cage minimum but falls short of the RWAF figure. A roofed pen needs enough height under the roof for the rabbit to sit up with its ears raised.
Bottom Line
Get the VISCOO 32-panel pen for tall walls, a lid, a door and a floor mat, as a run for one rabbit or a zone in a rabbit-proofed room.
Get the Living World habitat as a bedroom cage when lifting the rabbit out from the top matters more than price.
Get the Wabbitat for a smaller rabbit, or when a 5.5-inch deep base and the option of a wire or wood extension matter most; at 39.5 inches it is the shortest cage here.
Get the PAWING playpen at the lowest price here, after checking the rabbit can sit up under its 16.1-inch roof.
Get the 60-inch cage for the largest stated footprint here; cover its grid tread plate and check each level's head room.
Get the clear-door tray cage when pull-out trays matter, after checking its size.

This guide is an editorial synthesis of House Rabbit Society, RWAF, RSPCA, RSPCA Australia and Rabbit.org housing guidance, read against manufacturer-supplied Amazon listing specifications. PetPalHQ does not run a testing lab, and every size, base and feature figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement. The PetPal House Rabbit Housing Score is a weighted composite of published guidance and published specifications, and the per-factor scores for each pick are printed in the comparison table so each total can be recomputed.
