A frame that covers the fabric edges scores highest; a high-density, tight-weave fabric with plated corners comes next; then a chew-resistant inner layer under a soft outer; then a bite-resistant cover with reinforced corners over thick padding. A maker's stated limit caps the score: mild chewing only caps it at 2, and not for extremely aggressive chewers at 5. This is the one judgment factor. Weighted highest because chew resistance is the reason to buy from this category.
Crate Fit
25%How the bed is built to sit in a crate. 10 when it is sized to a named crate size; 9 when it is sized for a crate type and comes with an install or anchoring method; 8 when it is designed to fit standard crates generally; 4 when it is sold as a crate or cage lining; 1 for a freestanding elevated bed. The ASPCA and the AKC both point owners of unsupervised chewers to a crate or a dog-proof room, so a bed built for the crate scores higher.
Cleaning
15%How the bed gets clean, per its listing. 10 when the whole bed can be washed (machine washing, or wiping, hosing and scrubbing); 4 when care is spot cleaning, or the surface is built to resist dirt or water, dry quickly or let fur brush off. Weighted 15% because bedding a dog drools on, soils or sheds on has to come clean.
